Description: Basidiocarps perennial, resupinate to effused-reflexed, extending up to 1 m and up to 2 mm thick, hymenium light grey to cream, tuberculate, cracking with age, surface towards the substrate black. Characteristic smell of coconut. Basidiospores ellipsoid, 4.5-5.5 x 2.5-3 µm, hyaline, gloeocystidia conspicuous, clavate to bladder-like, filled with oily drops.
Distribution: Known from continental and alpine Europe, Asia, and North America. In Norway it follows the spruce area of the South East from Aust-Agder, inner Trøndelag, and up to Nordland.
Ecology: Boreal species in spruce forests. Basidiocarps grow on the sides and undersides of relatively fresh to medium decayed spruce logs. The fungus produces a white rot. Specimens from North America grow on hardwoods, especially Acer.
Remarks: Included in the Norwegian Red list. Status of threat: V+ (conservation demanding).
