Description: Basidiocarps annual, stipitate or sessile, up to 25 cm wide and 1.5 cm thick, upper surface yellowish, becoming brown from the base, tomentose to hirsute, faintly sulcate. Pores yellowish becoming rusty brown, 1-2 per mm, context yellowish brown, azonate, up to 1.5 cm thick. Basidiospores ovoid, hyaline, 6-9 x 4.5-5 µm.
Distribution: Cosmopolitan species. Probably distributed along the Norwegian coast, but there are no records from Trøndelag, Nordland and Troms.
Ecology: P. schweinitzii is a parasitic necrotroph that grows on all kinds of trees, even on monocotyledoneous hosts. It produces a heart brown, cubical rot of butts and roots of living trees and usually develops basidiocarps at the base or on the roots of the dead host. This species is one of the most aggressive parasites of commercial timber trees.
