Description: Basidiocarps annual, coralloid, with crown-like tips, 2-6 cm wide, 5-12 cm high, yellow becoming dull ochre, flesh whitish, taste peppery. Stalk up to 3 mm thick, very short, branched usually in 3-sided groupings. Basidiospores ellipsoid, hyaline, 4-5 x 2-3 µm, amyloid. Gloeocystidia present.
Distribution: Old-growth temperate hardwood forests in Europe (seldom) and North America (quite common). In Norway known from the Southeast, plus one 164-year-old record from Oppland.
Ecology: Grows on thick, medium to very rotten hardwood logs, mainly Populus, in old hardwood forests.
Remarks: Included in the Norwegian Red list. Status of threat: V+ (conservation demanding).
