  • Frisch, A. 2006: Contributions towards a new systematics of the lichen family Thelotremataceae I. The lichen family Thelotremataceae in Africa. - Bibliotheca Lichenologica 92: 3-370. [RLL Suppl. Rec.# 320]
Abstract: A new genus classification of the Thelotremataceae is presented. Myriotrema, Ocellularia and Thelotrema sensu HALE (1980, 1981) were found to be heterogeneously circumscribed and were segregated into more natural units. The following changes are made: Ampliotrema Kalb is validated, and Chapsa Massal., Leptotrema Mont., Leucodecton Massal. and Stegobolus Mont. are resurrected. The genera Acanthotrema A. Frisch, Gyrotrema A. Frisch, Melanotrema A. Frisch and Redingeria A. Frisch are described as new to science. 19 genera are accepted for the family: Acanthotrema, Ampliotrema, Chapsa, Chroodiscus, Diploschistes (not treated), Fibrillithecis, Gyrotrema (part II), Ingvariella (not treated), Leptotrema, Leucodecton, Melanotrema (part II), Myriotrema, Nadvornikia (not treated), Ocellularia, Redingeria (part II), Reimnitzia, Stegobolus (part II), Thelotrema and Topeliopsis. The Thelotrema glaucopallens- and the Ocellularia clandestina-group are of uncertain generic affiliation. The following generic synonyms are accepted: - Asteristion Leight.; Thelotrema subgen. Asteristion (Leight.) T. Matsumoto (= Chapsa). - Ocellularia sect. Chroodiscus Müll. Arg.; Phyllophthalmaria sect. Chroodiscus (Müll. Arg.) Zahlbr.; Phyllobrassia Vain. (= Chroodiscus). - Thelotrema sect. Tremotyliopsis Zahlbr. (= Fibrillithecis). - Enterostigma Müll. Arg.; Chiodecton subgen. Enterostigma (Müll. Arg.) Vain.; Enterostigmatomyces Cif. & Thomas. (= Leucodecton). - Coscinedia Massal.; Ocellis Clements (= Myriotrema). - Ascidium Fée; Antrocarpon G. Mey. emend. Massal.; Ectolechia Massal.; Porophora G. Mey. (= Ocellularia). - Antrocarpum G. Mey.; Brassia Massal.; Thelotrematomyces Thomas. (= Thelotrema). Approximately 1300 specimens collected during field work in Cameroon and Tanzania were investigated for this revision of the African Thelotremataceae, together with the relevant type material and c. 120 specimens obtained from public herbaria. From 73 taxa of the Thelotremataceae recorded from Africa 38 are accepted as valid species. L. monosporum sensu CENGIA SAMBO (1937; = Porina), O. scolecospora Dodge (= Lecidea stictidea Nyl.), T. cameroonensis Dodge (= Laurera megasperma (Mont.) Zahlbr.) and T. zenkeri Dodge (= Porina) are excluded from the family, while the types of O. bonplandiae (Fée) Spreng. sensu MÜLLER ARG. (1895a), O. cinerascens des Abbayes, O. myriopora (Tuck.) Müll. Arg. sensu MÜLLER ARG. (1895a), Ph. poncinsiana Hue, Ph. uber Hue and T. umbonatum Müll. Arg. were not available for examination. Together with 17 species described as new to science (see below and part II), O. vezdana nom. nov. and 47 species recorded for the first time from Africa, a total of 94 species is presently known from this continent. 50 species were collected in Cameroon as compared to 47 species in Tanzania. The highest species diversity wwas found in lowland rainforests in Cameroon (45 species) and in the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania (37 species). In contrast, there are only few species in the high altitude forests, mangrove forests, secondary forests and plantations, and in all drier forest types. Country checklists are compiled for the African Thelotremataceae, and the species inventory is listed for the more important habitat types and collection sites in Cameroon and Tanzania. The African C. alstrupii A. Frisch, C. kalbii A. Frisch, Le. biokense A. Frisch, Le. sorediiferum A. Frisch, My. neoterebrans A. Frisch, O. africana A. Frisch, O. bipindensis A. Frisch, O. cameroonensis A. Frisch, O. eumorphoides A. Frisch, O. flavisorediata A. Frisch, O. zenkeri A. Frisch, T. euphorbiae A. Frisch and T. zimbabwense A. Frisch are described as new to science. • Fryday, A.M./ Hertel, H. 2014: A contribution to the family Lecideaceae s. lat. (Lecanoromycetidae inc. sed., lichenized Ascomycota) in the southern subpolar region; including eight new species and some revised generic circumscriptions. - The Lichenologist 46(3): 389-412. Keywords: ALGAL STACKS/ BIOGEOGRAPHY/ DICHOTOMOUS KEY/ LICHENS/ PORPIDIACEAE/ THALLOCONDIDIA
Abstract: Eight new species of Lecideaceae are described from the southern subpolar region: Bryobilimbia coppinsiana Fryday [sic, error for = Bryobilimbia austrosaxicola Fryday & Coppins], a saxicolous species with one septate ascospores (Campbell Island, New Zealand); Immersaria fuliginosa Fryday, with a thallus composed of thalloconidia (Falkland Islands); Lecidea aurantia Fryday, with an orange thallus (Auckland Islands, New Zealand); L. campbellensis Fryday, with an endolithic thallus and apothecia resembling those of a species of Porpidia (Campbell Island); Poeltiaria ochyrae Hertel [sic, error for Poeltiaria coppinsiana Hertel], which is similar to P. subincongua but with a thick areolate thallus (South Orkney and South Shetland Islands); P. tasmanica Fryday, which is similar to P. urbanskyana but with smaller ascopores (Tasmania); Poeltidea inspersa Fryday with an enolithic thallus and a hymenium with large oil globules (Falkland Islands); and Porpidia vulcanoides Hertel & Fryday with immersed apothecia with a thick margin and large ascospores (SW Chile). Lecidea kalbii Hertel is resurrected from the synonymy of L. mannii Tuck. and treated as a distinct species. The circumscription of genera within the Lecideaceae is also discussed: Poeltiaria is shown to be heterogeneous, and the genera Labyrintha and NotoLecidea are reduced to synonymy with Poeltidea and Poeltiaria respectively, and the new combinations Poeltidia implexa (Malcolm et al.) Hertel & Fryday and Poeltiaria subcontinua (Hertel) Hertel & Fryday made. A key to the genera of Lecideaceae s. lat. is provided.

[RLL List # 261 / Rec.# 42014]
Abstract: Three new genera Coppinsidea, Vandenboomia and Wolseleyidea are described and the genera Ivanpisutia, Lecaniella and Myrionora are resurrected on the basis of a phylogenetic analysis of multi-locus sequence data of the Ramalinaceae including the nuclear protein-coding marker rpb2, the internal transcribed spacer and a fragment of the small mitochondrial subunit. The genus Hertelidea was positioned within the Ramalina clade of the phylogenetic tree of the Ramalinaceae. Bacidia sipmanii, Phyllopsora chlorophaea, P. castaneocincta and Ramalina subbreviuscula were recorded from South Korea for the first time here confirming by molecular data, too. Forty-eight new combinations are proposed: Bacidia alnetorum (basionym: Biatora alnetorum S. The combination Biatora longispora (Degel.) Lendemer et Printzen is validated here. The new names Biatora vezdana for Lecania furfuracea Vĕzda and Coppinsidea vainioana for Lecidea sphaeroidiza Vain. are proposed. The phenomenon of presence of ‘extraneous mycobiont DNA’ in lichen association, i.e. DNA, belonging neither to mycobiont nor photobiont or to endophytic fungi is for the first time illustrated. So the presence of nrITS and mtSSU sequences of crustose lichen Coppinsidea ropalosporoides in thalli of crustose Verrucaria margacea and foliose Kashiwadia orientalis, as well as nrITS of Phyllopsora sp. KoLRI in Agonimia pacifica and Biatora longispora, or nrITS and mtSSU of Biatora longispora in thalli of Agonimia pacifica, Oxneriopsis oxneri and Pyxine limbulata, Ivanpisutia oxneri in thalli of Rinodina xanthophaea, etc. is documented. Scarce cases of presence of ‘extraneous mycobiont DNA’ in representatives of the Teloschistaceae, Physciaceae known from literature data are discussed, too.
