Abstract: 4 tables. 3 figures. [A detailed study of 20 phycobionts belonging to Trebouxia and Pseudotrebouxia; keys. New: Pseudotrebouxia galapagensis sp. nov., P. gigantea sp. nov., P. higginsiae sp. nov., P. jamesii sp. nov., P. showmanii sp. nov., P. usneae sp. nov. and Trebouxia irregularis sp. nov. "Identical phycobiont species were isolated from widely different lichens which showed that these algal symbionts were not specific to particular mycobionts. There was much variation in cellular detail within individual algal species indicating that the criteria currently used to separate species of these phycobionts may be too restrictrive."]
