Abstract: 6 figures. 6 tables. ["It is evident from the foregoing paragraphs that while cation binding by lichens most likely involves carboxylic acid-containing ligands, the exact nature of the binding molecule or molecules has yet to be determined. The preliminary study of mycobiont cell walls, using fractionation coupled with metal uptake studies, suggested that cell-wall proteins might be important in metal binding. The extracellular matrix and lichen acids appear not to take part in metal-ion binding, but may be important as regards the total metal content of naturally-collected thalli."]
