Abstract: 56 fig., 1 tab. [A discussion and evaluation of taxonomic characters useful in classifying the Alectoriaceae. Based primarily on their study of ascospore, ascus, and hamathecium characters in the alectorioid genera, the authors conclude that only Alectoria, Oropogon, and Sulcaria should be included in the Alectoriaceae, with Bryoria, Bryocaulon, and Pseudephebe excluded. The taxonomic part includes formal descriptions of the family Alectoriaceae and the above-mentioned genera, as well as several parmelioid genera (Cetrelia, Menegazzia, Parmelia, and Parmelaria) with similar apothecial characters.]
