Includes a tabular comparison of the esorediate and subulate members of the Cladonia gracilis group in western North America, and one comparing several thamnolic acid-containing members of Cladonia sect. Perviae. Many new synonymies are given. New: Cladonia albonigra sp. nov., C. ecmocyna subsp. occidentalis Ahti subsp. nov., C. novochlorophaea (Sipman) comb. nov., C. schofieldii Ahti & Brodo sp. nov.
