Abstract: 1 fig. [" ... the highest rate of gas exchange occurs at temperatures from -1 deg. to -16 deg.C when the light intensity is below its maximum and when the plant is wet.... For optimal growth the plant has to be wet, and for any growth at all to take place at least some water must be present. This finding is in contrast to that of Lange and Bertsch (1965), who observed that certain lichens could absorb sufficient water vapor from air to achieve near optimal levels of gas exchange."]
