Ranking and Scaling produces optimum biozonations, whereas CASC produces correlations with uncertainty limits. The programs use a minimum of fossil distribution data to achieve a maximum of stratigraphic resolution. Event variance analysis tests the difference between observed and stratigraphically expected positions, and models the difference between average and total stratigraphic range of events.
