FACT SHEET: Phlebia centrifuga P. Karst.

written by Maria Nunez

Description: Basidiocarps annual, sterile if overwintering, resupinate, ceraceous to gelatinous when fresh, hymenium orbicular, radially wrinkled, with rose and warm-brown colours, margin whitish, fibrillose

Distribution: Known from continental and alpine Europe. The similar species P. mellea occurs in North America, but the conspecificity with the European P. centrifuga has not been demonstrated. It shows preferences for continental areas and never appears in suboceanic climate. In Norway it is known from the continental Southeast, with two records in continental Trøndelag and one from Nordland.

Ecology: The species grows exclusively on big, fallen, partly corticated, relatively fresh trunks of Picea, mostly on sides and undersides. It is strongly associated to old-growth forests, especially Vaccinium-Hylocomium forests, but also in herb-mixed spruce forests. Its dry basidiocarps can subsist the whole year.

Remarks: Included in the Norwegian Red list. Status of threat: V+ (conservation demanding).
